Artifact Inspiration: Jade Deer

Western Zhou Dynasty – Jade Deer
Excavated in 1993 from the Marquis of Jin’s tomb in Quwo County, Shanxi Province, China. The tomb’s occupant was the secondary wife of Marquis Mu of Jin.

The jade deer is a yellowish-brown, flat-bodied carving. Its head features elegantly branched antlers, and its full-bodied form is defined with smooth, rounded curves to depict muscle contours, giving it a clean and dynamic silhouette.

The deer’s back arches and its hind legs are slightly bent forward, presenting a poised, alert posture — as if it is lifting its head to survey its surroundings, ready to spring into action. The sculpture exudes a vivid sense of movement and energy.
